Kalivo

Kalivo is a typography training lab built for designers, letterers, sign painters, and anyone who finds themselves photographing shop fascias and carved inscriptions. Point your camera at real lettering in the world, drop four draggable type-lines onto the image, and Kalivo measures the x-height ratio, cap proportion, stroke contrast, and stress axis of whatever is in front of you. A stroke caliper and live metric strip update as you drag, and the app classifies the specimen against the Vox-ATypI system — the same taxonomy professional type designers use — then ranks which of seven bundled typeface families come closest. Training your typographic eye takes repetition. The Spacing Comb places draggable handles between every letter pair and scores your rhythm against Walter Tracy's n/o control-word method, showing deviation as a warm colour ramp so you see at a glance where your eye is slipping. The Kerning Pair Workbench works through sixty catalogued problem pairs — AV, To, LT, and dozens more — in Practice, Sweep, and Audit modes. The Anatomy Explorer renders a giant glyph with thirty-four named markers (aperture, counter, finial, ink trap) and quizzes you on them with proximity hints. A Modular Scale Calculator renders your chosen ratio at real computed sizes in any of the seven families. A Readability Solver checks characters-per-line targets and recommended leading. A Pairing Bench scores two families across five metric relationships. Every specimen you capture goes into a numbered field collection, sortable by Vox class and comparable side-by-side. Your Eye Record tracks per-skill mastery across spacing, kerning, anatomy, and classification, with a sparkline of your last thirty attempts and a running tally of which Vox classes you have found in the wild. Everything is stored on-device. Kalivo works fully offline. Kalivo is designed for the sort of person who already looks up when they walk under a painted shopfront. It gives that instinct a measuring instrument.
