Mancala is the national game of sixteen African countries, under sixteen different names: Awale in Cote d'Ivoire, Songo'o in Cameroon, Oware in Ghana, Ayo in Nigeria, Omweso in Uganda, Igisoro in Rwanda... Songo carries all of them, with their real rules, in a single game. A TOURNAMENT, NOT A MATCH Face the five spirits of the village one after another. Between rounds, pick one charm out of three: the Ant captures on 4 seeds, the Chameleon grants an extra turn, the Griot shows what every pit will yield. Lose a round and the run is over. Every tournament plays differently. TWO FAMILIES OF RULES Awale has two rows and a store: you win by collecting most seeds. Omweso has four rows and no store: you win by blocking your opponent.
