Stare: A Sitting Practice

STARE gives you a reason to put your phone down, then gets out of the way. Choose how long you want to sit. Place the phone so the rear camera faces whatever you were looking at. Nothing is photographed while you sit. When the time ends, STARE takes one picture of the view in front of you. Never your face. Keep it in a private diary or let it go. Each stare becomes a small record of where your attention was. Add a short note, revisit your diary, and turn it into a print when you want something physical. With friends, you can leave a moment for someone or ask them to sit with you. Their photographs meet after both people have taken time for themselves. Friends' stares arrive after your own, and the feed always ends. STARE works without an account. Stare Pro adds sitting together, longer sittings, and full resolution diary prints. The app is built around a few promises. The feed is finite and ends. Nothing is presented as new twice. One reminder a day, and nothing else unless a friend asks to sit with you. Time away, and changes in phone use as percentages. No likes, views, counts, streaks, followers or leaderboards. The front camera is never used. There are no ads and no tracking.
