Wordspan: Vocabulary Test

How many English words do you actually know? Not a guess — a measurement, in about three minutes. HOW IT WORKS You see 80 words, one at a time, and answer whether you know each one. Sixty are real, drawn evenly from ten frequency bands: from the thousand most common words in English down to ranks 35,000–45,000, where most native speakers start to run out. The other twenty don't exist. WHY THE INVENTED WORDS MATTER They're not a trick. Every vocabulary test has the same problem: people over-claim, some more than others, and there is no way to tell from the answers alone. The invented words measure exactly that. Claim a few and your score is corrected down by the same rate; claim more than a third of them and the test tells you it can't be scored and asks you to try again. Websites that ask the same questions mostly skip this check. It's the difference between a number and a number worth having. TEN MINUTES A DAY You know more English than you can say. Most people can read a word they could never produce — you'd recognise "colander" instead of calling it "the pasta thing with holes". Daily practice works on exactly that. Every day brings back the words that are due, then a few new ones: • Things around you — everyday words by room: kitchen, bathroom, tools, the street, the body. The words textbooks skip. You see a description and say the word — or type it. • Your frontier — words from just past where your vocabulary stops, with meanings and examples. • Spaced review — each word comes back after a day, three days, a week, and so on, until it sticks. • A count of words learned — a real count, not an estimate. A word counts once you've recalled it after 35 days. • Home Screen widgets — today's word, your streak and your level. WHAT YOU GET FROM THE TEST • A range, not a false-precision figure — "8,200 – 11,400 words" • An indicative level, so the range means something • Where your vocabulary stops: a breakdown across all ten frequency bands • A share card that looks like a result, not an advert WHAT'S COUNTED Lemmas — base words. "Run", "runs" and "ran" count once. Some tests count word families instead, which group a base word with everything derived from it; the same person scores roughly 15,000 in word families and roughly 40,000 in lemmas.
