Carrel - Your personal library

Carrel turns documents you already have into something you can properly read and mark up: chapters, a place you left off, and a page that keeps what you thought. Novels, fanfiction, papers, textbooks, anything you keep as a file. Bring it in and read it a chapter at a time. --READING Carrel opens EPUB, PDF, TXT and HTML. It reads the contents page when there is one, and works the chapters out when there is not. If a book splits into the wrong chapters, re-split it, and your highlights and notes come back on the same passages. Two display modes per book: a plain web page, or a serial with note counts on every annotated paragraph. Same text, same notes, a different room to read it in. Four themes from paper to true black, with your choice of face, size, line spacing, margins and paragraph style. Atkinson Hyperlegible is included and costs nothing, because a legibility face is not a feature to sell. PDFs are reflowed into readable text. That is right for prose and wrong for anything two dimensional, so any book can switch to Original pages and show the page as it was printed, still highlighted and annotated as you go. --MARKING Highlight a passage in five colours that mean whatever you decide they mean. They arrive unnamed on purpose. Name them yourself, or never name them at all. Write a note on a chapter, on a shelf, or on the passage itself. Make a synapse: a link from a passage in one book to a passage in another, with a line about why the two speak to each other. It shows at both ends. A notes hub gathers everything you have written across every book, and search runs over the full text of your library and over your own notes. Export takes all of it back out whenever you want, and export is free. --LISTEN & FIVE READING AIDS Listen reads any chapter aloud in your device's own voice. Focus paragraph dims everything but the one you are on, a reading ruler tracks the line, and bionic-style emphasis, chunked chapters and a session timer are there when you want them. --TWO LOOKS Softcover is rounded cards, gentle animation and a colour for every book. Archive is hairline rules, quiet type and almost no motion at all. Both read the same, both reach everything, and you can change your mind whenever. --YOUR LIBRARY STAYS YOURS No account, no sign-in, no sync, no ads, no analytics. Nothing you import, highlight or write leaves your device, because there is nowhere for it to go. Carrel has no server. The other side of that promise, said plainly: deleting the app deletes your library with it.
