Somm Journal is a wine journal and a beginner's course in tasting, in one app. Most wine apps tell you what a crowd thought of a bottle. This one teaches you to judge it yourself, then shows you what your own palate keeps coming back to. HOW IT WORKS Log a wine using the same structured walkthrough professionals use — look, smell, taste, conclude — in plain language, with sliders anchored in words instead of jargon. It takes about a minute, and doing it the same way every time is what trains your palate. Every entry records three separate things, and never blends them into one score: • What is in the glass — colour, aromas, sweetness, acidity, tannin, body, finish • How well made it is — worked out from balance, intensity, finish and complexity • Whether you enjoyed it — with the context that shaped it: the occasion, the food, the temperature, the company That last part matters. A crisp white you loved at a summer lunch is not competing with a big red you had with steak, so Somm Journal never forces them onto one leaderboard. Instead it builds shelves that make sense: your best weeknight whites, your best value bottles, your favourites with rich food. A COURSE, ONE BOTTLE AT A TIME Short lessons teach you how tasting actually works — the five structures, the grapes that define each end of the scale, how climate shapes a wine, how to read a label. Each lesson ends with a tasting mission: something specific to buy, usually under twenty dollars, with a hint for finding it. You unlock the next lesson by tasting, not by reading. FIND OUT WHAT YOU LIKE Once you have logged a handful of wines, your palate profile appears: the grapes, regions, vintages and price bands that sit at the top of your journal, the structures your favourites share, and the styles you have never tried that you probably should. CALIBRATION The app compares the calls you make against what a grape is typically known for and tells you, gently, where your palate is drifting.
