Mortise runs open language models entirely on your own device. There is no server to trust, because there is no server at all — no account, no sign-in, no cloud inference, no telemetry, and nothing metered. A MODEL CATALOG THAT FITS YOUR HARDWARE A curated list of open-weight models, most of them licensed Apache 2.0 or MIT. Every entry carries an on-device memory estimate, so you can see what your Mac, iPad, or iPhone will actually run before you download anything. The weights land on your own disk and run for as long as you like. CHAT WITH YOUR DOCUMENTS Attach a PDF, Word document, or PowerPoint deck and ask questions about it. Mortise indexes it locally and picks the right retrieval strategy — whole document, chunked, or summarized — then answers citing the page or slide it drew from, shown beside the answer. The file never leaves the machine. BUILD A SEARCHABLE LIBRARY Group related documents into a named knowledge base and search all of them at once. Mortise ranks the matching passages, stitches neighbouring ones back into whole excerpts, and has the model answer with numbered citations pointing at the source file. READS WHAT YOU CANNOT COPY AND PASTE Scanned pages and the text inside slide images are read on device with Apple's Vision framework, so image-only material is searchable too — still with nothing sent anywhere. GROUNDED ANSWERS FROM THE WEB — OPTIONAL, OFF BY DEFAULT When a question needs current information, a model can call a live web search and answer with clickable citations. Search stays off until you switch it on and supply your own Brave Search API key. Only the search query leaves your device, sent straight to Brave with no server of ours in the path. CONVERSATIONS THAT SURVIVE MODEL SWAPS Switch from a small model to a large one mid-conversation and keep the thread. Conversation memory is shared across every model in the catalog, so your context travels with you. ENCRYPTED AT REST Conversations, imported documents, and everything derived from them are encrypted where they sit — not just tucked behind a login. The key is generated on your device and kept in the Apple Keychain, so it never syncs anywhere. On iPhone and iPad, Apple's file protection keeps those files unreadable while the device is locked. Every install keeps its own encrypted store on the device, so nothing has to round-trip through a cloud to reach your other hardware. It ships without model weights — on first launch it recommends the models that fit your device and downloads the one you pick, over Wi-Fi. Models range from a few hundred megabytes to several gigabytes; bigger models answer better, run slower, and need more memory.
